Gen Ys: Lazy or hardworking?
It's interesting to see the media lately around the work ethic of Generation Y. Headlines such as "Managers unhappy with Gen Y" and "Gen Y disappoints employers" are getting a lot of airtime lately. These articles quote surveys saying business owners claim Gen Y's are impatient, demanding and difficult to manage. For me though, I think it's all a matter of perception and leadership. Perception, because we all have a chance to see problems or opportunities. Take for example, the tags 'impatient' and 'demanding', which can reveal itself in the workplace in a number of ways, like ambition, the need of instant gratification, the desire for continuous feedback and be involved in decisions that affect their job and workplace. These can be seen as positive or negative, and your perception will influence your leadership. See it as a positive and you can see employees that are 'ready for a variety of challenges' and 'willing to learn and improve - fast'. In the latest report by the National Centre for Social and Economic Modeling at the University of Canberra, it found that Gen Y's are actually working and studying harder than previous generations. So why aren't managers harnessing this? The leadership style needs to change to engage Gen Y’s. LEADERSHIP BEFORE Boss Specialty Respect for time spent Conformity Tell Control What?
LEADERSHIP NOW Mentor Variety Respect for resultsCreativity EngageFlexibilityWhy? Could you try… Presenting Gen Y’s with a variety of tasks? Offering incentives for performance and results? Communicating the value of the work performed by the Gen Y? Presenting fun and interactive learning programs such as the yGen program? Organising activities that develop relationships in the office? Offering flexible working times? What is your perception of different generations and how does that affect your leadership?
Thinking of joining the yGen program
Ever wondered how you get that promotion? Or how to talk to your boss so they will listen? Would you like to improve your leadership and management skills? Want to listen to top CEO's and leadership experts? Or network with WA's next generation of CEO's and experts? If you said Yes to any of these - you need yGen. yGen is a monthly mentoring program that incorporates facilitated discussions on workplace goals and challenges, offers practical training/learning sessions, networking opportunities and guest speakers/presenters. Plus - you get to design the program! You will choose the topics discussed, speakers sought and the opportunities that suits your needs. I will be facilitating these groups so members get exactly what they need. yGen groups are very small - 8 to 10 members maximum. Alicia Curtis Leadership is taking registrations now for a start in September. Register your own group of 8 or register to be included in a group. Making Perth a more vibrant city!
I have just finished a TV interview with Chantelle Toohey about how to make Perth a more vibrant city which should be aired in the next couple of weeks. Since Charles Landry's proposals about how to make Perth a more exciting place to live, the city has been buzzing with ideas and opinions. Some of my thoughts included:
- Our Community needs to stop being afraid of change. We need a vibrant leadership team who are unafraid to make positive change.
- Generation Y are highly educated and highly mobile, meaning they can and will move anywhere to get what they are looking for. We don't what to lose these young people!!
Activities
- We need to attract more modern activities to Perth like the Air Race. Activities that bring people together.
- We need to attract activities that highlight Perth’s strength – our natural environment, our wines and laid back lifestyle.
- There is no night life in Perth. In my recent trip to South Korea, the shops didn’t close till 4am in the morning and opened again at 10am. The atmosphere spilled out into the streets with open air markets, food and places to meet were in abundance. The City buzzed at night.
Retail trading hours
- Generation Y wants more choices when it comes to shopping.
Daylight saving
- Daylight saving adds to the atmosphere of the city. Our Summer is one of our strengths - let's use it.
Our Indigenous culture
- Why not represent the indigenous towns around WA through dot paintings around the city.
- Welcome signs could be translated into indigenous language too.
Youth Spaces to encourage arts, networking and innovate!
- Trendy places to invite young people to share, network and encouraged to join a non profit organisation or art, drama or dance project.
- Young Entrepreneurs want a place to socially network and share ideas.
Environmental Hub
- Perth can become a city known for it's sustainability. We could be a leader in solar power, efficient public transport, recycling or water use.
What are your thoughts?
